At Sunland Foursquare Church we believe that love is action and that Jesus truly calls us to love our neighborhood in tangible and transformative ways. That is why on the first Saturday of every month, the Love the Neighborhood Initiative gathers together to clean up our local streets, parks and meet the tangible needs of our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood and neighbors. All kinds of neighbors of all ages and walks of life quickly become friends as they unite hands and hearts to serve and do together what they could not get done alone! This initiative that was birthed in June 2015 by Sunland Fourquare Church has exponentially grown, connected many neighbors who were previously strangers and is greatly transforming the Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood! We would love to have you join us on the journey of loving our neighborhood in greater ways!
BEAUTY IS TRULY COMING FROM THE ASHES IN SUNLAND-TUJUNGA NEIGHBORHOOD. In 2017, hundreds of faithful neighbors and friends from many walks of life have united to clean trash off our streets and parks, beautify unsightly traffic medians and care for the special needs of neighbors. As we are in the wake of a wildfire that has scorched our town and also looking ahead to the Holiday Season, we’d love to have you join us to transform Sunland-Tujunga with LOVE!
Join us this Saturday, November 4th from 8:00 – 10:30am at one of our two locations for Love the Neighborhood Initiative. Unite hands and hearts with friendly neighbors, local church-goers, the Verdugo Hills Football Team and make some great new friends. Coffee, treats, supplies and a very fun time will be enjoyed by all. Can’t wait to see you all there!
Weeds are ugly. Weeds are pesky. Weeds can take over quickly. Weeds distract from and choke out life and beauty. And if you want to get rid of weeds, it takes time, dedication and, sometimes, even a little pain. If we could sum up today’s Love the Neighborhood Initiative, it’s safe to say that, “WE GOT INTO THE WEEDS TOGETHER AS ONE!”
Even though our group may have been a bit smaller than usual this month, we worked together with such great passion to restore and reveal beauty all over our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood:
-Traffic Medians were weeded and cleaned
-Commerce Avenue was loved and beautified
-The scorched hillside next to the 210 freeway received an incredible makeover
-Unsightly graffiti and clutter was removed from a local shopping center
-A small group of children and their parents entirely cleaned Sunland Park
-We even joined forces with the STNC Beautification Committee to do an overhaul on our Welcome Garden
…and you’ve never witnessed such smiles, love and joy coming from people who are getting into the weeds together as one! Thank you Love the Neighborhood Initiative for working hard to reveal beauty, life and hope once again in our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood after such a difficult season in our world!
Upon looking at our neighborhood and all that it’s been through in the most recent season, I think we can all agree: LOVE is what Sunland-Tujunga needs the most! SAVE THE DATE. Come out Saturday, October 7th and give your love back to the neighborhood and witness how we can truly transform it in real time together. We have so much great work to do and can’t wait to unite hearts, heads and hands with YOU!
EVEN WHEN FIRES RAGE, LIFE CAN STILL BE GOOD AROUND THE TABLE! Due to the intense heat wave we were experiencing last week, we decided to cancel September’s Love the Neighborhood Initiative and gather for breakfast at the Crow’s Nest Sports Grill instead; not knowing that our beautiful neighborhood would have a fire raging at our back door. As neighbors sat around the table, we encouraged and comforted one another and also collaborated together how to answer some of the needs caused by the fire outside. It just goes to show that even when we take time to simply break bread and enjoy the company of one another, our Love the Neighborhood Initiative can’t help but do exactly what our name is all about: loving Sunland-Tujunga.
Thank you Art & Susan Miner and Crow’s Nest Team for supporting the Love the Neighborhood Initiative and for having such a wonderful gathering place for our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood!
WE CAN (AND HAVE) HANDLE RAIN. BUT HEAT IS A WHOLE OTHER STORY! Your safety definitely matters most. Due to the extreme heat wave that we are having this week, we have canceled Saturday’s initiative. However, we will love the neighborhood in another way by gathering together for breakfast at The Crow’s Nest Sports Grille from 9:00 – 10:30am. We will be hanging out and staying cool together, enjoying some great breakfast and you can even come and pre-order one of our new t-shirts.
We will continue with our regular monthly meetings together in October! If you’re going to be in town, come join us. If you’re out for Labor Day Weekend, be safe and we look forward to seeing you in October!
SO FAR IN 2017…
-Over 700 bags of trash removed from our streets and parks
-Over 150 neighbors serving together
-One new host location joined (and more in the works)
-4 neighbors with special needs served in their homes
-5 local restaurant joined as sponsors and supporters
-1 award from our Chamber of Commerce for Beautification Advocates of the Year
-and SO much love given to transform our S-T neighborhood!
…we STILL have four more months left in the year. Imagine what we could get done with YOUR partnership and how different our neighborhood would look because of YOU!
Let’s find out together. Please come and join us as we continue to love the neighborhood as best as we possibly can!
THEY’RE FINALLY HERE! We now have our Love the Neighborhood Initiative General Information Cards that can be handed out to our Sunland-Tujunga friends, neighbors, business owners and literally ANYBODY who approaches us during our initiative asking:

C) WHEN & WHERE do you meet together?
….and because Love the Neighborhood Initiative is SO fun…
D) HOW can I partner with you in the future?
These will be available at Sunland Foursquare Church and The Hub Community Church this Sunday as well as at our next initiative on Saturday, September 2nd!
AN ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD WAS LOVED & SERVED WELL TODAY! Over 120 amazing workers showed up this morning to love, clean and beautify the streets, sidewalks, parks and store fronts of our very own Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood. Over three truckloads of trash, weeds and debris (filling 104 industrial sized trashnbags) were removed from our town by the inspiring efforts of children, high schooler students, senior citizens and every other background with a heart to serve and give back. Foothill Blvd from Sherman Grove all the way up to Commerce Ave, from Oro Vista out to Big Tujunga Canyon and the entirety of Sunland Park; all were filled with smiling faces eagerly seeking the betterment of our town. Thank you so much to all who made this morning so incredibly special and to those who continue to support the ongoing growth of this amazing initiative. You are transforming a city with your love!
A very special thanks to the Verdugo Hills High School Football Team, our Sponsor of the Month (Link N Hops), to the STNC Beautification Committee for your participation and to our two amazing host churches: Sunland Foursquare Church and The Hub Community Church
Great things are truly ahead for our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood as we love it together!

NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES!
…this is more than true. In my book, the real heroes are people like this: over 70 Sunland Tujunga neighbors and friends from all different walks of life who came out this morning to love the neighborhood together. As you can see from the photo, we completely broke the “Fun Meter”. A group of children picked up loads of trash at Sunland Park and then played in a freshly cleaned playground together. Two mothers who were first time visitors and previously strangers quickly bonded as they beautified Commerce Ave alongside a group of high school football players. A Tujunga couple brought delicious homemade breakfast burritos for all to enjoy and then served alongside members of our neighborhood council in the home of a couple they’d never met with various physical limitations; then with time to spare, they went to our town hall to tackle other pressing needs. The traffic median under the 210 freeway was weeded and cleaned by a group of joyful, loving people that most likely don’t all share the same spiritual beliefs or backgrounds. The span of Foothill Blvd where our 4th of July Parade will be held in three days, where there was previously trash, neglect and disarray, was replaced by love, laughter and care that transformed it all in the span of just two hours. This is just a small snapshot of what transpired at today’s Love the Neighborhood Initiative brought to you by some of the real heroes of Sunland Tujunga. Thank you to EVERYBODY who came out to make it so special and effective; you are the true heroes of our Sunland Tujunga neighborhood.
A special thank you to the Verdugo Hills High School Football Team (you rock) as well as our amazing local sponsor of the month: Pena’s Tacos.
We can’t wait for our next one in August and would love for you to come and join us in transforming our neighborhood together!
Check out our new t-shirt design that will be coming soon to our Love the Neighborhood Initiative community. We are also in the process of printing Kid’s T-shirts, business cards and bumper stickers. So exciting!
Looking forward to spreading the word with you all in greater ways in the coming season!
This morning, which marked exactly two years after our first gathering, our Love the Neighborhood Initiative gathered and united over 100 neighbors to serve Sunland-Tujunga; our largest group yet! Our two host churches welcomed neighbors of all different ages and backgrounds, as well as the Verdugo Hills High School Football Team, who quickly became friends as they cleaned local streets, sidewalks, traffic medians and Sunland Park. Cars passing by couldn’t help but honk, smile and joyfully say “thank you” as they saw a neighborhood united and serving in love. A new local Thai restaurant showed their sincere gratitude by bringing out refreshing iced teas for one team. Curious neighbors couldn’t help but stop and ask those serving along Foothill Blvd from Sherman Grove up to Haines Canyon, “Why are you doing what you’re doing?”. One inspired neighbor even gave a generous donation on the spot to bless our future work. This all goes to show that the Love the Neighborhood Initiative is a movement that just keeps picking up momentum and shows no signs of stopping!
This is what happens because of YOUR faithfulness to show up continually and make this initiative what it is today. We are so honored to serve and love Sunland-Tujunga alongside you all and look forward to growing together as we keep transforming our neighborhood in greater ways!
Special thanks to Coach Jackson, Sandra Watkins and the Verdugo Hills High School Football Team, our local sponsor of the month Backdoor Bakery Cafe and our two host churches: Sunland Foursquare Church and The Hub Community Church.
This morning over 50 amazing friends and Love The Neighborhood Initiative community gathered to enjoy a great time together over breakfast, conversation, raffle/auction prizes, music and a heart to love our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood together. You wouldn’t believe the amount of food, prizes and care that were contributed to make today so great as we raised over $1,300; all of which will go toward future projects to serve and improve our neighborhood! Special thanks to our very own Venessa Martinez who coordinated and made everything possible as well as our generous local sponsors The Crow’s Nest Sports Grille, Backdoor Bakery, local artist Abby Diamond and Kittie Lessa for the beautiful floral arrangements. For all who joined us, served and contributed to make this morning so great, you are greatly loved and appreciated. We couldn’t do this without you all and can’t wait to do this again!
Today we had our most exciting and monumental Love the Neighborhood Initiative yet! Not only did we have our largest turnout of neighbors participating and most trash bags filled (once again), but we also had two additional hosting locations open their doors for the seventy-plus neighbors and seven participating local churches to come out and serve in the rain with big smiles on their faces. Neighbors of all different ages and walks of life gathered together, made new friends, and united hands and hearts to beautify traffic medians, streets and sidewalks from the Sunland Blvd 210 exit, all the way up Foothill Blvd to Big Tujunga Canyon and down to La Tuna Canyon. What a powerfully tangible difference two hours can make when we love the neighborhood together! We would love to have you come and grow with us and and help transform our neighborhood in the coming season!

Spring Cleaning in Sunland-Tujunga has never been so fun, effective and full of joy! This morning over 50 neighbors came out to participate in one of our best Love the Neighborhood Initiatives yet. Eight amazing teams comprised of all ages and walks of life, both willing and eager to serve, were sent all over our neighborhood: into Sunland Park, up to Commerce Ave, all along the sidewalks and medians of Foothill Blvd and even into several homes. A six year old boy paints over gang-related graffiti in the park. A group of six strangers quickly become friends as they remove unsightly waste dumped in front of local businesses. A group of young adults serves an elderly couple in their home, but receives an even greater surprise blessing at the end of the day. Simultaneously, hearts are filled to overflowing with joy, new friendships are made and our streets are emptied of over fifty bags of trash! This is just a brief snapshot of all the amazing life that happened today through our Love the Neighborhood Initiative! We invite you to dream with us about what is to come as you join us on the journey of loving our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood together! Thank you to everybody who served today and to all who continue to make this initiative what it has become today; and also thank you to our first Monthly Sponsor: Arnie’s Coffee & Cruise!
Not even a rain storm can keep us from loving our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood as one! This morning over 35 amazing S-T neighbors and friends bundled up and came out to contribute in making our first Love the Neighborhood Initiative of 2017 incredible! Here is just a glimpse of what was accomplished today in OUR neighborhood through these united heads, hands and hearts: Foothill Blvd completely cleaned from 210 Freeway to McVine. Four large traffic medians completely weeded and cleaned. Trash removed from Sunland Park. Transient Encampment cleaned on Foothill Blvd. Christmas Tree in Welcome Garden taken down. Large Dump cleaned on Big Tujunga Canyon by Baseball Field. Tujunga woman with physical limitations was loved and assisted with special needs in her home. Over 50 bags of trash and many other bulky items completely filled a 6-Yard Dumpster. It’s so incredible to see all the powerful and tangible ways our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood was loved in just two hours. Just imagine what will happen and how our neighborhood will be transformed in the season to come as more and more neighbors like yourself join in on this amazing initiative. 2017 is going to be a great year for our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood! In the meantime, THANK YOU to all of you incredible people who contributed your “little” today that ended up becoming such a great, positive lot for our town!
What an amazing morning we had at our final Love the Neighborhood Initiative of 2016. We were able to accomplish so much with the 27 amazing people who came out to join us. With teams of people all over Sunland and Tujunga, we completely filled up 55 industrial trash bags (very heavy), beautified three very unsightly traffic medians, cleaned Foothill Blvd and also sent a team to wash the exterior windows in the home of an elderly woman. Not only did we love our neighborhood today, but our neighborhood loved us! Every group had a complete stranger stop along the way to thank them and give them gifts such as chocolate, coffee and pastries! You’d never think that showing up for two hours of cleaning trash on a Saturday could have such a huge impact. However, when we are united together with hearts to love the neighborhood and serving with smiles on our faces, anything is possible! Thank you to everybody who joined us today and this year to make loving our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood so fun, infectious and life-giving. The best is yet to come in 2017!
Today’s Love The Neighborhood Initiative was by far our biggest and best yet! We had well over sixty of our Sunland-Tujunga neighbors join us (many new faces and returning ones) as well as representatives from Clean Streets LA, LAPD and both our past and present Public Works Commissioners. After a very life-giving time of hanging out over a coffee and donuts, instructions were given on how to use the MyLA311 app and how our first ever 311 scavenger hunt would work; and boy did it WORK! Hundreds of pounds of trash were removed from Foothill Blvd (from Sherman Grove to Tujunga Canyon Blvd) and Sunland Park. Many bulk items, graffiti sites and encampments were tagged for cleanup with the 311 app. Most of all, our beloved Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood was tangibly loved and cared for by all these amazing individuals who took a couple hours out of their day. Thank you to everybody who continues to serve through this initiative and transform our community with your faithful hands and hearts. This movement is exploding with life and momentum and we can’t wait to see what’s next for our amazing, growing Love the Neighborhood Initiative in the season to come! Also, thank you to all of our local businesses and stakeholders that donated prizes for the amazing winners of our scavenger hunt!
Our Sunland Foursquare Church and the amazing work happening through our Love the Neighborhood Initiative was featured on the November edition of our local paper: The Foothill Record. You can check out the fun and inspiring article by clicking on the following link: CLICK HERE
If you noticed our streets and Sunland Park looking cleaner this weekend, it’s because of these awesome, smiling faces and their amazing hearts to serve! Our Love the Neighborhood Initiative is becoming a fun, flourishing community of neighbors from all walks of life who are monthly connecting and contributing to together bring tangible, positive change to our town. It’s astounding to see what the 50 regular attendees can get done in two hours once a month. Could you imagine what we could do together if we doubled or tripled that number? In the coming season we will be branching out beyond just cleaning trash on the streets. If there’s a median with towering, unsightly weeds, large items that have been dumped on the side of the street that need removal or even an elderly couple who needs a fence repaired or door fixed, the Love the Neighborhood Initiative will be there! If you have special skills and supplies that could be used to serve and help, as well as a heart to love the neighborhood with us in special ways, we would love to have you join us! In the meantime, thank you to all these amazing workers! Your heart and dedication to our S-T neighborhood is incredible!
If you noticed Foothill Blvd and Sunland Park looking a little cleaner today, be sure to thank these amazing men, women and kiddos who showed up to our Love The Neighborhood Initiative to get things beautified for our upcoming 4th of July Parade on Monday! Over 30 neighbors came out this morning, made new friends over coffee and donuts and had a lot of fun keeping our streets, sidewalks and alleyways clean. This growing little initiative on the first Saturday of each month has been such a wonderful way to connect our Sunland-Tujunga neighbors together to simply love the neighborhood in greater ways and we would love to have you join us for the next one! Happy 4th of July to you all!
We had so much fun with all these wonderful people at our last Love the Neighborhood Initiative. There are so many incredible, encouraging stories and moments that transpired just because our neighbors and church family said “YES” to taking two hours out to serve our S-T neighborhood! This marked the one-year anniversary of this amazing little initiative and we can’t wait to see what happens in the next year. In the meantime, thank you to everybody who joined us today! You’re all officially rock-star status!
Despite the threat of rain this was one of our best attended clean-ups yet with new faces and old partnering together to clean up Foothill and ALL of Sunland Park. God is doing great things through this simple initiative and we look forward to have you at our next one! One of the many highlights was a group of five children (and adults as well) cleaned up every visible piece of trash at Sunland Park (the whole thing) and one of the kids did all of this even though today is his fourth birthday (WOW)! That’s inspiring service. This little initiative has been going on for exactly one year and has grown so much and we would love to have you part of making year number two even better as we love our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood together! Thank you so much everybody!
This Love The Neighborhood Initiative was incredibly fun and life-giving! So many great things and new relationships with our neighbors are happening through this simple initiative and we want YOU to be a part of it in the future! You have such an important role to play on our journey! Stay tuned because you don’t want to miss out on the next one in May!
What an awesome time we all had at our latest Love The Neighborhood Initiative. So many new friendships and great connections with our Sunland-Tujunga neighbors were made as over twenty people cleaned Foothill Blvd as well as Sunland Park. Thank you so much new friends and old for loving our neighborhood well and making such a great impact in the community. We are excited to transform this neighborhood in future seasons as we all work together!
We had an awesome time at our last Love The Neighborhood Initiative. We made some great new friends and got so much cleaned up in our neighborhood! There’s some really great things in the works for the future of this initiative and ways you can partner to help love our Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood in greater ways!
A huge shoutout and thank you to the amazing servants who came out to serve alongside our Sunland-Tujunga neighbors and clean up our beautiful Big Tujunga Canyon. We had so much fun, served alongside new friends and made a huge impact on the neighborhood that Jesus has sent us to love and serve well! We look forward to more incredible opportunities like this in the future and the doors that they will open for being and bringing the good news of Jesus to our amazing Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood!
